Basic, Standard or Advanced These terms only apply to the Radar equipment, but they are frequently applied to a VTS System as a whole, which creates confusion. In fact, there is even confusion between IALA documents on this point as the VTS Manual 2012 refers to Basic, Standard and Advanced VTS Systems.

23 Nov 2010 the Hong Kong Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) and to develop (“IALA”) is developing new standards and guidelines for electronics navigation.
IALA – specifically through its VTS Committee – facilitated over decades the further development of VTS to a modern vessel traffic management Aid-to-Navigation providing operational, technical, organizational and training Standards, Recommendations and Guidelines. The IALA Aids to Navigation Management (ANM) Committee has coordinated the review of the IALA NAVGUIDE. All sections have been reviewed and revisions made through expert input from all of the IALA Committees – ANM, Engineering, Environment and Preservation (EEP), e-Navigation (e-NAV) and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS). During the transition to IALA standards, some navigational aids will be relocated, removed, or modernized to improve maritime safety. Mariners will require less time to study nautical charts while sailing at night. It will, however, remain important that mariners plan their voyages well and that they use updated nautical charts when doing so. The "TRIHAWK V650 Series" is the JRC standard type of VTS system capable of a medium to large scale of sea area surveillance.
